FAQ

SAG support and EMT's will be provided on all routes. All riders must wear CPSC, Snell or ASTM certified bicycle helmets and obey traffic laws, inlcuding not riding into Isleta Pueblo. Riding with headphones is not allowed. Please choose routes within your capabilities and be prepared to make minor repairs. We cannot anticipate every road surface hazard or construction project you will encounter on this ride. Use common sense and caution at all times.

  • TORGBC is recommended and designed for anyone 13+ from casual rider to seasoned cyclist.

    The TORGBC route is flat and divided into four ride lengths (39, 62, 80, and 100 miles) to accommodate cyclists of all experience levels. More casual riders can even sign up for the 39 but do 19.5 miles and take the Rail Runner back from the Los Lunas Station.

  • Century (100 mile route) riders are encouraged to start at 7am and strongly encouraged to be on the road by 8 a.m. All other riders need to start by 9am. Support Operations end at 3pm, and routes will be swept for remaining riders between the 2 PM and 3 PM hour.

  • The median temp is 71 degrees with a high of 83 degrees and a low of 59 degrees. There is usually no over cast and it has not rained on ride day, the last Sunday of the month, for as long as the ride has existed (2019). The wind may and does pick up in the later morning / early afternoon, which could be a tail wind on the way back to the start. Or at least we hope.

  • No. It must be purchased with registration.

  • In the past, social events after the ride were unsuccessful. Instead, we’ve partnered with Canteen Brewhouse to give riders 15% off their food bill starting the Friday the week before the ride through the weekend after the ride.

  • TORGBC is a tour – a casual cycling event at the riders own pace. Casual riders can start at any time appropriate for completing their chosen ride length, and there is no mass start. However, seasoned cyclists have a chance to race against their previous times – riding to crush a personal best Century time.

  • The TORGBC route runs parallel with the Rio Grande through Bernalillo, Valencia, and Socorro Counties of the Rio Grande Valley. Riders will see the more relaxed side of New Mexican life as the tour winds its way through agricultural towns such as Los Lunas, Belen, Isleta Pueblo, and Bernardo.

  • It is not uncommon for an experienced Century rider to finish the 100 mile tour in about 4.5 hours. A casual rider or family group can choose a shorter route to suit the experience level of everyone participating, but because time to complete is dependent on pace and route length, there is no real way to say how long the ride will take.

  • Caravan Ham Radio Club staffs most of the SAG support by patrolling the route and monitoring the progress of participants by bib number – watching for requests for help, mechanical breakdowns, noticeable fatigue, or any other situation that would require assistance and support.

    Three separate EMT Stations are spread out along the route to ensure fast response times. Emergency care can be requested by any samaritan, participant, or SAG staff member.

    It is recommended that participants put the emergency number 505-433-1716 into their phone before the race in case services are needed. Callers will need to name a landmark near them to ensure fast location by EMT teams.

    Mobile Bicycle Repair Mechanics are on call – first come, first attended. Use the number 330-518-4708 to request emergency mechanical assistance. Gear for mechanics provided by Northwest Cyclery.
    High Visibility Personnel are located at key points along the route to direct cyclists along the correct path.

  • Our Premium Rest Stops are stocked with water, Gatorade, peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, oranges, bananas, dried fruit, pickle juice, pickles, trail mix, sunscreen, tire pumps and gold bond.

  • The 39 Mile route has one rest stop at it's midway point, plus end-of-ride meal and drink.

    The 80 mile route has four rest stops, plus end-of-ride meal and drink.
    The Century route has five rest stops, plus end-of-ride meal and drink.
